On the morning of December 11th 2021, via Microsoft Teams, more than 200 students from the 48th class, the Faculty of International Communication and Foreign Affairs had a meeting with Director of Music Nguyen Huu Vuong - who was behind the success of numerous renowned singers including Ha Anh Tuan, Tung Duong, Huong Tram, etc.

Self-taught to play the flute

At the beginning of the meeting, the students got to know Mr. Nguyen Huu Vuong when he talked about his family and his fateful encounter with music. From a very young age, he used to listen to Modern Talking and taught himself how to play the flute. In 1998, he started to learn music at the age of five. After nearly 10 years, he searched for opportunities to perform live at coffee shops, hotels and bars. In 2010, he worked for the Thang Long music and dance group as well as the Ngu Cung band.

His music career took a new turn when he renounced all his previous work to focus on professional music production. At that time, he only had opportunities to work with lesser-known singers or newly graduated students. The name Nguyen Huu Vuong gradually became more recognized when he worked in the music production team of the show Proud Melodies. Since then, he started collaborating with renowned singers and had a memorable milestone as the Director of Music of Ha Anh Tuan’s successful “Fragile” liveshow.

Memorable liveshows

Afterwards, the speaker shared stories about the process of preparing music concerts for renowned singers as well as unforgettable memories. To prepare for a concert night, he and the singers discussed and came up with a suitable playlist to convey a message. He considered himself a perfectionist in handling songs and renewing the mix to “push” listeners’ emotions. In every music concert, the usual difficulties are sound equipment problems and unfavorable weather.

When asked about his favorite music concert, he shared that Ha Anh Tuan’s “Truyen Ngan” liveshow (2019) and The Veston Concert (2021) were the most memorable ones. One of the factors making the liveshow successful was that it has to end with a high note. The final song had to be grand and epic so that the audience could feel positive and entertained.

“Rap music will have its spotlight”

At the end of the talk, the students asked a few more questions to Mr. Nguyen Huu Vuong. Mr. Vuong shared his honest opinion about the Vietnamese National Anthem copyright infringement incident. Some students who were passionate about composing expressed their concerns about how to create their own identities via their work, Mr. Vuong then suggested listening to music daily and paying attention to how to make music in order to avoid running out of ideas. At the same time, he encouraged them to come to him for help if they wanted to follow the music career path.

Noticeably, when asked about the position of Rap music in the future, Nguyen Huu Vuong affirmed: “Rap music has its own place in Vietnam. But how popular can it be? I think it is only temporary because television programs such as “Rap Viet'' and “King of Rap” gave it a popularity boost. At the moment, Rap music is so popular that every TV program includes Rap music, every song has a Rap verse. Rap music will continue to say but it won’t be as popular as it is these days.”

At the end of the talk, the speaker made some comments about the domestic music industry. He believed that at present, Vietnamese music is diverse and unpredictable, however, only songs with  meaningful lyrics and beautiful melodies can reach the hearts of listeners.

After the meeting, students expressed their awe with Director of Music Nguyen Huu Vuong’s distinctive style. It was a meaningful exchange where students were provided with an in-depth perspective on music, and the idea of supporting the use of music to connect with the public.
