International conference “Vietnam and the United Nations Security Council: Toward Membership and Election for 2020-2021

On 30 March 2018, at Sheraton Hanoi, the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) successfully organized the international conference "Viet Nam and the United Nations Security Council: Toward Election and Membership for 2020-2021". This high-profile event aims at assessing advantages of and challenges to Vietnam in the candidacy, membership and election to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and thereby, puts forwards appropriate recommendations to Vietnam so that it is best prepared for this exercise.

Attending the conference were Mr. Olof Skoog – Swedish Ambassador to the United Nations Security Council for the term 2017-2018delegates from the Secretariat of the United Nations, the Security Council Report, Australia, Indonesia and other officers who assisted Vietnam in its successful performance at the United Nations Security Council for the term 2008-2009. Also on hand at the conference were 100 delegates and representatives from embassies and international organizations in Hanoi, various departments from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, other relevant ministries and stakeholders, scholars and members of the academic community studying the United Nations.

Addressing the conference, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs H.E. Mr Dang Dinh Quy held that the election to the UNSC is an enormous pride and responsibility of non-permanent members. Fully aware of this immense honour, Vietnam has applied for the non-permanent membership of the UNSC for 2020-2021. Vietnam’s second application to this important organization after the first successful term testifies to Vietnam’s foreign policy of peace and for national independence, cooperation and development. This also demonstrates, at the highest level, Vietnam’s foreign policy of diversification, multilateralisation, active and responsible participation at international forums and organizations.

Participants at the conference conducted open and frank discussion on the performance and operation of the UNSC, evaluating advantages of and challenges to a non-permanent member, sharing experience of various nations in capitalizing on advantages and addressing challenges at the UNSC. The conference has received numerous constructive and substantive feedback and opinions so that Vietnam can lay its necessary groundwork for its candidacy and ultimate election and membership to the UNSC for 2020-2021./.
