HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT

The Faculty of Chinese Language (hereinafter referred to as “the Faculty”) originated from a department within the Foreign Languages Division. Due to the increasing needs of Vietnam’s foreign affairs sector, Chinese language has been taught at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam since the very first cohort (1985–1988).

Over the decades, the Faculty has grown into one of the Academy’s key academic units, renowned for its excellence in Chinese language training and research on Chinese culture and society. Our lecturers not only conduct high-quality teaching and scientific research but also actively engage in Track II diplomacy and people-to-people exchange activities. Generations of graduates have become core officials working in important positions across agencies within and beyond the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Students of the Faculty are nurtured in a comprehensive academic environment, with frequent opportunities to join research seminars, receive support through friendship scholarships, and participate in major Chinese language and culture competitions nationwide.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS

• In 2019, the Faculty was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Minister of Foreign Affairs for outstanding achievements during 2016–2018, contributing to the development of Vietnam’s diplomatic service.
• Faculty members have compiled numerous textbooks and teaching materials for students.
• The Faculty has organized and supervised many language and cultural exchange activities related to China within the Academy.
• Students have achieved high results in various Chinese language competitions:
  （1）Second Prize in the “Chinese Character Dictation Contest”                            organized  by the Confucius Institute at Hanoi University (2020);      （2）Second Prize in the “National Chinese Language Oratory Contest –              Da Nang” organized by the Union of Friendship Organizations, the              Vietnam–China Friendship Association of Da Nang, the Chinese                  Consulate General, the University of Foreign Language Studies –                  University of Danang, and other partners (2023);     
  （3）Second Prize in the “Chinese Debate Contest” organized by Foreign              Trade University (2023).

• The Faculty has played a key role in connecting DAV with the Embassy of China in Vietnam for the establishment of the Chinese Reading and China Studies Room(2021), and in securing annual Vietnam–China Friendship Scholarships for DAV students.

• The Faculty regularly trains, selects, and sends lecturers and students to present at scientific conferences, seminars, and international friendship exchange programs.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

The Faculty provides students with a solid foundation of both fundamental and specialized knowledge, enabling them to build strong linguistic competence aligned with their field of study. Fundamental training equips students with listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for effective communication with native speakers, while specialized modules offer knowledge in Chinese history, economy, culture, society, and diplomacy. These modules also strengthen students’ ability to comprehend Chinese news and further develop their interpreting and translation skills through authentic materials such as speeches and media interviews by Vietnamese and Chinese leaders.

ACADEMIC STAFF

The Faculty of Chinese Language consists of highly qualified lecturers trained at prestigious universities in Vietnam and abroad. In addition to their academic expertise, many lecturers have extensive practical experience, having served in various missions at Vietnamese Embassies and Consulates overseas.
