[Recap] Lecture “Economic rise and success of Viet Nam in a single generation” by Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Vietnam

On the morning of 28th November, 2023, in hall A, Faculty of International Economics held a seminar on “Economic rise and success of Viet Nam in a single generation: reasons, foreign policy and future” with the attendance of Ambassador A Saj U. Mendis - visiting lecturer of the Faculty of International Economics and faculty members: Ambassador Tao Thi Thanh Huong - Former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Singapore, Dr. Nguyen Vinh Thanh, Dr. Pham Phuong Ngoc and a large number of K48 and K49 students majoring in International Economics and International Business.

Some pieces of information about Dr. U.Mendis, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Vietnam:

- Master of Business Administration at San Francisco State of University;

- PhD in International Economic Policy at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi;

- Guest lecturer at 35 universities around the world, including Harvard University;

- Previously held positions: Acting Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Japan; Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Bahrain; Sri Lankan Ambassador to Korea;

- Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka.

- Currently, he is Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary - Sri Lankan Embassy in Vietnam and a visiting lecturer at the Faculty of International Economics - Diplomatic Academy.

Opening the discussion, on behalf of the Faculty of International Economics, Ambassador Tao Thi Thanh Huong gave a few words and presented Ambassador A Saj U. Medis with a bouquet of fresh flowers. Continuing the program, Ambassador A Saj U. Medis shared about international trade and the global economic trajectory, focusing on the positions of the countries of China, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Singapore. He described the contributions of the four above countries to global GDP, affirming the importance of commitments with major economies as well as regional economic organizations. Besides, the speaker also evaluated the change in the position of Vietnam, China, Singapore and Sri Lanka over the past years on the world map, predicting the future economic trajectory of Vietnam in particular and those 4 countries in general based on the political, economic, etc. situation of each country.

After the lecture, there was an exchange and question-and-answer session between the Ambassador and students of the Faculty. Regarding today's topic, the students of the Faculty of International Economics were extremely excited to exchange and answer the teacher's questions while also sharing personal questions to build the lesson, creating an exciting atmosphere for the session.

The seminar ended with the conclusion "The 21st century is the century of Asia" when political and economic activities are shifting to Asia, away from Europe and North America. The increase in economic potential of the 4 selected countries is proof for that.
