[RECAP] The graduation thesis defense ceremony of the English faculty at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam - A showcase of diverse and impactful Linguistics research topics
Last Friday, 31st May 2024, the Top 6 most outstanding students out of 53 graduation theses from English language major Cohort 47 presented their research highlights in front of a distinguished panel, lecturers, parents and fellow students. These studies encompass important and highly valued topics within the field of applied linguistics, such as Critical Discourse Analysis and Political Discourse Analysis.
Nguyễn Trần Trâm Anh presented her thesis titled "Tasting with Tongues: A Study of Strategies and Challenges in the English Translation of Vietnamese Cuisine." Her research delved into the intricacies of translating Vietnamese culinary terms and descriptions into English, emphasizing the cultural and linguistic challenges involved.
Lê Vũ Nguyệt Minh analyzed "Joe Biden's Call for Congressional Support for Ukraine through the lens of Discursive Strategies and Rhetorical Devices." Her work focused on the persuasive techniques employed by President Biden to garner support for Ukraine, examining his use of language and rhetoric.
Nguyễn Ngọc Khánh An explored "Implications of Rights to Education and Peace for Women and Children in Malala Yousafzai's Nobel Peace Prize Lecture: A Critical Discourse Analysis." Her critical analysis shed light on the powerful messages in Malala's speech, particularly concerning women's and children's rights.
Vũ Đức Hùng conducted "A Critical Discourse Analysis of Shashi Tharoor's Oxford Union speech: A Fairclough approach." His thesis applied Fairclough's framework to dissect Tharoor's speech, uncovering the underlying discursive strategies and their implications.
Hà Quang Thành focused on "Analyzing politeness strategies used in Donald Trump's 'Meet the Press' interview: A Brown and Levinson's theoretical perspective." His analysis provided insights into the politeness strategies used by Trump during the interview, using Brown and Levinson's politeness theory.
Nguyễn Đức Kiên examined the "Implications of Vietnamese Bamboo Diplomacy in Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's statement at the General Debate of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 22nd, 2023: A Critical Discourse Analysis." His research highlighted the diplomatic strategies and linguistic nuances in Prime Minister Chinh's statement, which has rarely been done before in this body of research.
Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Lien, the dean of the English faculty, praised the scientific research abilities of this batch of English major graduates. She expressed her belief in the future of English linguistic research and the promising careers that lie ahead for these talented individuals.
The ceremony was a testament to the hard work and academic excellence of the students, marking a proud moment for the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam.
